It is getting a whole lot easier to be a couch potato.
In the not-too-distant future, video entertainment devotees will be able to record television programming remotely via a Verizon Wireless mobile phone.
Walking the mall and realize you forgot to record Fox TV drama "24?" No problem. Just whip out your cell phone, punch a few buttons and you won't miss a minute of Jack Bauer's latest escapade.
The Bedminster-based wireless carrier said yesterday it is teaming up with TiVo to allow subscribers to record their favorite television programs via their wireless device. It will debut later this summer and pricing will be announced.
The service, dubbed TiVo Mobile, is the latest offering from the Alviso, Calif.-based company as it faces increased competition from cable companies that offer their own digital recording devices.
TiVo customers already have the ability to program recordings via TiVo and other Web sites, so Internet-ready cell phones share that capacity, too. Now, the option will also be available to cell phones without a Web browser.
"It's a logical next step," says Frederick Moran, an analyst who follows TiVo for the Stanford Financial Group.
